Should my business use a WhatsApp AI assistant in South Africa?
Short answer
If your customers already message you on WhatsApp, an AI assistant can answer FAQs, qualify leads and handle bookings there, without asking anyone to install an app. Build it on the official WhatsApp Business Platform, follow its messaging rules, and keep a clear handover to a person.
What it can do
Common jobs for a business WhatsApp assistant:
- Answer frequently asked questions
- Qualify leads before a salesperson calls
- Take and change bookings
- Send updates the customer has asked for
Platform rules to plan for
Businesses connect through Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API). Under its rules, free-form messages can only be sent inside an open 24-hour customer service window that starts when the customer messages you; outside that window, businesses use approved template messages. Businesses must also follow WhatsApp's Business and Commerce policies.
What we learned building Zara AI
Zara AI is our own WhatsApp assistant for South Africans, R99/month and working on any phone. It understands slash commands and natural language, and drafts messages for approval before sending on a user's behalf. Meeting people inside the chat app they already use removes the biggest barrier to adoption.
Privacy
Chats contain personal information, so POPIA applies. Be clear about what the assistant stores and who can see it.
